- 1). Cut out the front and back pieces of the pouch. Both pieces should be rectangular and slightly (an eighth of an inch or more, depending on how tightly you want the knife to fit in the pouch) wider than the knife you want to carry in the pouch. The front piece should be about half an inch longer than the knife, and the back piece should be about one and a half times this length to include the closure flap.
- 2). Cut out the two side pieces of the pouch. These pieces should be identical, both slightly shorter than the front piece and slightly wider than the knife is thick.
- 3). Sew the long edges of the side panels to the long edges of the front piece and of the back piece to form a rectangular tube. The smooth side of the leather should be on the outside of the tube on all sides, and the bottom edges of all the pieces should line up. Sew the seams tightly to prevent the pouch from loosening later on. The knife should be able to slide through the tube.
- 4). Sew the bottom edges of the front and back together, pinching in the middle of both side panels so that the seam includes them as well. You will probably need to use a leather awl to make the stitching holes because you will be stitching through four layers of leather. Make sure this seam is secure enough to hold the weight of the knife.
- 5). Attach a snap closure to the front and underside of the closure flap. To do this, put the knife in the pouch and bring the top of the back piece over and down on the front of the pouch, then use gentle pressure with the awl to mark the spot for the snap closure with an indentation on both pieces of leather to make sure the two halves line up. Line the two pieces of each half of the snap closure up on both sides of their respective leather pieces and press them into place with a snap setter (available from leather and craft supply stores).
- 6). Cut two parallel vertical slits in the back piece, at least half an inch apart and 2 inches long, to form a belt loop.
