How to Draw WWII Warbirds From Books

    • 1). Draw a long, skinny rectangle with rounded edges to construct the basic body of the warbird you have chosen to draw. Use light pencil strokes until you are satisfied with the proportions of the body.

    • 2). Sketch the wing or wings as they are pictured in the book you are using to draw the warbird. Move to the rear of the plane and sketch the tail by using a gradually curved vertical line connected to a straight vertical line. If necessary, use a ruler to assist you in drawing the wings and tail of the plane.

    • 3). Draw an oval-like shape in the middle of the warbird's body to represent the cockpit of the plane. Study the picture in the book and determine how the frame and windows of the cockpit are constructed. Keep using light pencil marks through this section.

    • 4). Draw a circle on each of the wings that are pictured to give yourself a guideline to follow for the propellers. If the plane you are sketching is flying, these propellers appear circular anyway. However, the propeller features distinctive blades with equal lengths as they attach to the center piece. Carefully sketch the blades.

    • 5). Detail the plane, starting with the front nose and moving backward. Use the book image to determine how the panels and rivets form the body. Slowly detail each section of the plane using light pencil strokes. Complete the detailing process by including the graphics and wording that appears on the side of the plane.

    • 6). Compare the rough draft of your warbird with the picture you are using from the book. Erase any unnecessary pencil lines from the drawing.

    • 7). Trace the outline and details of the warbird airplane with an ink pen. Carefully move over each of the pencil lines to ensure you do not smear any ink or make any other mistakes. Let the ink dry, then completely erase any remaining pencil marks.
