- Candidates sitting for the NCLEX-RN must first submit an application for licensure for their state board of nursing. Although this requirement does not involve the National Council of State Boards of Nursing, it is the first step in sitting for the exam. The state board of nursing will review the candidate's application to determine his eligibility to take the NCLEX-RN and receive notification when he is eligible to move forward with the examination process.
- Once the candidate receives approval from her state board of nursing, she must register to sit for the NCLEX-RN. Pearson Vue is the company that administers the exam on behalf of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing. Candidates can acquire a registration form through their state board of nursing or they can submit their registration online. Telephone registration is also available. As of April 2011, the cost of sitting for the NCLEX-RN was $200, payable by credit or debit card, cashier's check, certified check or money order.
- State boards of nursing distribute Authorization to Test forms to candidates who apply to sit for the NCLEX-RN. These forms are required before candidates can schedule a date for the exam. The ATT form includes the candidate's authorization number and identification number. It also provides an expiration date, which ranges from 60 to 365 days depending on the state. Candidates must take their exam before the expiration date on their ATT form.
- Candidates have to schedule a date to complete their NCLEX-RN. They cannot simply show up to the testing center to complete it. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing recommends that candidates schedule their exam dates as soon as they are ready to take it, as testing centers fill up quickly. First-time examinees will receive a testing date within 30 days when they call to schedule the date.
