- 1). Locate an antistatic wrist strap. These can be purchased at many electronics stores and should be purchased in a kit that comes along with a rubber pad.
- 2). Unplug the computer before opening removing any covers and exposing the inner components of the computer.
- 3). Lift the computer's tower and place it onto the rubber pad, if applicable. This will help prevent any further build up of static electricity.
- 4). Place the antistatic wrist strap around the wrist of your dominant hand, or the hand that will be performing work on the computer.
- 5). Secure the strap around your wrist. The strap should be tight enough to avoid it from slipping but it should also fit comfortably.
- 6). Attach the alligator clip that is found at the end of the wire attached to the wrist strap to the metal computer chassis. This action will prevent any static electricity from building in your body and being transferred to the computer.
- 7). Work on the computer as needed.
