How to Clean a Drain with an Electric Eel

    • 1). Put on your safety glasses and heavy leather gloves put on your safety glasses. Plug the Electric Eel into a ground fault circuit interrupter connected to a grounded wall outlet. Test, then reset the interrupter.

    • 2). Set the operating switch to the forward position. Release the cable clamp on the cable housing. Set the Electric Eel drain cleaner to within 3 feet of the pipe to be cleaned. Set the foot actuator switch near the pipe opening.

    • 3). Release the cable tension knob and pull out around 1 foot of cable. Attach an appropriate cleaning tip to the end of the cable for the obstruction you want to clear. For instance, use a spring hook to remove an object of clothing from a drain. Insert the end of the cable and the cable guide spring into the pipe opening.

    • 4). Hold the cable guide spring with one hand. Start the cable cleaner with the foot switch. Set the feed control lever to to "Forward." Allow the cable to feed into the pipe as the cable turns until the end of the cable meets the obstruction.

    • 5). Press the cable down to cut through the obstruction. If the load on the cable prevents it from turning, stop the machine turning and pull up, then back down to free the tool point on the end of the cable. Continue this process until all obstructions are cleared.

    • 6). Place a water hose into the pipe opening and flush the pipe with water. Set the feeder control lever to "Reverse." Retrieve the cable from the pipe, continue to run the cleaner and manually pull the cable from the pipe and feed it back into the cable housing on the device. Stop the cleaner as the end of the cable reaches the pipe opening.

    • 7). Wash any debris from the spear-point tool on the end of the cable. Remove and dry the tool. Feed the remainder of the cable back into the cable housing. Set the feeder to "Neutral" and tighten the cable tension knob.
