- Take all the things out of your refrigerator and freezer, then unplug the unit. Allow all of the ice to melt within the ice maker, an then dump out the contents. Using hot soapy water, wipe down all of the components of the ice machine and rinse with warm water. Then replace the ice container into the freezer and lower the power bar to allow the machine to continue making ice once you plug it back in.
- To clean the interior hoses of the ice machine, disconnect the water-input hose and drain it, after closing the water shutoff valve. Add some warm soapy water inside the hose, then reconnect it to the water valve. Let the ice maker run several duty cycles to get the soapy water passed through the system. Be sure to use a non-toxic soap that rinses well even with cool water.
- Many ice machines have a built-in cleaning cycle. They accept a special solvent that works through the system, including the hoses, to quickly and thoroughly clean the machine's internal parts. Check the owner's manual for a particular model's cleaning-cycle protocol. Many manufacturers recommend that automatic cleaning cycles be run every three to six months depending on usage.
- Keep baking soda in the freezer to help keep the ice smelling normal. Follow a regular cleaning cycle of three months for optimal performance. Always unplug power sources and shut off water valves when servicing an automatic ice maker.
