- 1). Measure the height of the base cabinets from the floor to the middle of the rear horizontal nailing strip.
- 2). Mark the dimension determined in Step 1 on the wall studs at each corner of the walls where the base cabinets will be installed. Measure from the floor surface vertically and mark the dimension, then connect the marks at each corner, using a chalk line to establish a horizontal center line for the backing blocking.
- 3). Measure the height of the upper cabinets.
- 4). Mark the dimension determined in Step 3 on the wall studs at each corner of the walls where the upper cabinets will be installed. Measure from the ceiling joists downward and mark the dimension. Be sure to allow the additional measurement for cabinets that do not attach tightly to the ceiling and for range hood or other cabinets that are not full height. Connect the marks that designate the bottom line of the cabinets on the wall studs, using a chalk line to establish a horizontal center line for the backing blocking.
- 5). Cut the base cabinet backing blocks. Measure the horizontal distance between the wall studs in each bay at the chalk line, and cut a 2-inch by 8-inch wood block to this dimension, using a circular saw.
- 6). Install the base cabinet blocks. Slide each block vertically into the space between the studs, centered on the chalk line and flush with the wall face. Secure the block with two 16d nails through the stud into the block at both ends.
- 7). Cut the upper cabinet backing blocks. Measure the horizontal distance between the wall studs in each bay at the chalk line and cut a 2-inch by 8-inch wood block to this dimension.
- 8). Install the upper cabinet blocks. As with the base cabinet blocking, slide the block vertically into the space between the studs, centered on the chalk line and flush with the wall face. Secure the block with two 16d nails through the stud into the block at both ends.
