RCA TV Repair Troubleshooting Tips

    • RCA sets often can be fixed by accessing Menu options.tv image by martini from Fotolia.com

RCA produces a wide range of television sets, from plasma to traditional CRT models. Like all TVs, RCA sets can occasionally encounter situations that result in poor sound or picture quality. Many of these troubles can be repaired by adjusting the television set's settings or by referring to the owner's manual. If problems persist after troubleshooting, get in touch with RCA Customer Service or hire a qualified repairman.

    Format Problems

    • RCA wide-screen or HD televisions can display formatting problems that cause black bars to be visible around the perimeter of an image. This usually is not a problem with the TV, but rather is caused by to the formatting of the program you are watching. Most TV programs are broadcast in standard, rather than wide-screen format. On a wide-screen TV, this means black bars will fill gaps that otherwise would be filled by a wide-screen picture. The RCA website suggests changing the picture ratio to 16:9 if you are bothered by the fact that the picture doesn't fill the screen. If the problem occurs on all channels and at all times, it may be caused by a technical problem with the TV. Technical faults should only be tackled by an experienced TV repairman or by contacting RCA directly.

    Black and White Display

    • RCA TVs that display color programs in black and white can be repaired by adjusting the position of the TV's antenna. A poorly positioned antenna can distort image quality and cause images to lack color. If moving the antenna does not correct the issue, press the Menu button on your remote control to access the Picture Quality menu. There, you can adjust color, contrast and brightness levels. This can restore color if the settings were incorrect. RCA TV sets that constantly display black and white images may need to be restored to factory settings. Hold down the Cancel or Rest button on the remote control to accomplish a factory reset.

    Humming Noise

    • RCA plasma televisions often produce a humming noise when first powered up. This usually only continues until the TV has warmed to normal operating temperature. However, the humming sound may recur if your RCA TV is in a hot room or if it is mounted in an elevated position. You can keep the room cool by drawing drapes and turning on the air conditioning. If an elevated set consistently makes a humming noise, try moving it to ground level
