Getting a good nights sleep is a must if you want to feel alert and ready for the day ahead. One of the biggest things that can affect your sleep is temperature, if you are too hot or too cold then you could be kept awake all night. Obviously you can combat this by changing the settings on your central heating but an easier way is by changing your duvet cover depending on the season. All quilts come with a tog rating and this rating is an indication of how warm the quilt will be with a higher rating meaning a warmer cover.

The tog rating is not necessarily an indication of how thick or heavy the bedding is, it is more to do with the properties of the materials that are used in production. You could have a cover that is lighter and thinner than another but due to the materials being more insulating it could provide more warmth. The actual ratings range from 4.5 tog up to 15 tog with there usually being another 5 or 6 available in between. You should therefore look to have one of the less warm, 4.5 tog quilts on during the summer months and then change in the winter to a higher tog.

You will usually find that a quilt that is filled with natural materials such as feathers will give more warmth than one of the same thickness but made from synthetics. The reason for this is that natural materials generally have much better thermal properties although there are some synthetics that are now reaching similar levels. Natural materials can also give a softer feel but again synthetics are catching up with this.

So, if you want to give yourself the best chance of getting the sleep you need then it is important that you make sure you have the right duvet cover on your bed. Whether you are always too hot or always too cold, choosing the right tog rating can make a major difference to how you feel.
