- 1). Walk over the tilling area and remove large and medium size rocks by hand. Put them in a wheelbarrow and haul them to the edge of the space you want to till. Remember to lift with your legs so that you do not harm your back.
- 2). Hoe the soil or use a shovel to dig around rocks that are partially sunk into the soil. Pry out the rock and put it into the wheelbarrow.
- 3). Rake the lawn to drag small stones off the surface. Rake them to the edge and into a pile.
- 4). Start to till the ground, pushing the tiller over the surface at a shallow depth. After passing over the area once with the tiller, go back over the soil with a hoe or rake. Stir up the soil and remove rocks as you see them.
- 5). Till the soil several inches deeper than the surface. Stop and remove any rocks that you see as they are exposed.
