- 1). Fit adjustable jack posts next to the old iron porch columns to support the weight of the roof as you remove the old columns.
- 2). Put on safety glasses and a dust mask, then fit a metal cutting blade into a reciprocating saw.
- 3). Cut through one iron porch column about 1 inch from the roof, then cut through the bottom about 1 inch from the floor, leaving two small iron "stumps" in place.
- 4). Put the reciprocating saw aside and retrieve an angle grinder. Grind down the iron stumps until you reach the roof and floor. This will take some time, but is the most effective way of removing the remaining iron from the floor and roof.
- 5). Repeat steps 3 and 4 for the remaining iron porch columns.
- 6). Sweep the porch thoroughly with a broom after removing the iron porch columns to finish and ready the porch for replacement columns.
