Glass Block Masonry Ideas for Bathrooms

Use glass blocks to create a dynamic bathroom with modern appeal. Because glass blocks cannot be cut, making them fit together is best done by a professional. A professional mason can use mortar to fill the space evenly. Depending on where you want the blocks, it may be necessary to remove some wall to create the required space. Your mason or contractor can manage that as well. Glass blocks can be used in windows, showers or as decorative walls.

    For the Window

    • One of the most popular uses of glass blocks is to fill the window space of a bathroom, especially a large, square window. Typically, square windows, and even corner windows, are situated over a bath with Jacuzzi jets. Rather than deal with window treatments, which may grow mold due to constant exposure to moisture, replace the plain glass with blocks. Your mason will set them so they are flush with the outside wall. Often, this will leave you with a little shelf space inside. If so, to make the surfaces easier to clean and put more durable tile on any exposed shelf area.

    For a Shower Wall

    • Another use for glass blocks in the bathroom is as a shower wall. Picture a corner shower with a glass door opening into the middle of the bathroom. The back two walls are nestled in the corner and are covered with tile. But the third wall extends into the bathroom itself. Often this wall is next to the tub. Do this wall with glass blocks. Not only will it allow more light into the shower, it'll give the bathroom a more modern look. And the blocks will sparkle next to the tub.

    For Half-Walls

    • Depending on your bathroom arrangement, you may have half-walls separating parts of the bathroom. A half-wall may be used at one end of the tub for decoration. Sometimes, a half-wall is all that's used to separate the toilet from the rest of the room. You can use a half-wall of glass blocks. It allows light to pass through, keeping the bathroom from feeling small and crowded, while still providing privacy. Any place you would use a short wall, you can use glass blocks.
