- 1). Turn the poncho so that its right side is facing you. Attach the yarn at the right shoulder seam using the knitting needles and yarn.
- 2). Pick up stitches from the right shoulder seam around the neckline to the left shoulder seam. Pick up the stitches from their backs to avoid making holes in the right side of the knitted fabric.
- 3). Pick up a poncho stitch with your left needle and knit it on to your right needle. Knit the actual stitches rather than slipping loops on to the left needle. Do this twice in each neckline stitch.
- 4). Work the next row, a wrong side row, by knitting the first five stitches, purling across the row, and knitting the last five stitches. Knit all the stitches on the right side row.
- 5). Repeat these two rows until the piece measures about 14 1/2 inches in length or until it's long enough to cover your head. Bind off all the stitches, cut the yarn with the scissors and weave in any ends.
- 6). Block the knitted piece flat by following the yarn manufacturer's care instructions. Allow it to dry.
- 7). Fold the hood in half so that the garter stitch edges are even. Sew the bound-off edge on the wrong side using a length of yarn and the blunt needle.
