- 1). Make a ring. Hold the tail of the yarn in your left hand and form a circle with the yarn. Bring the yarn around to the back with your right hand and push a loop through the circle to the front. Grab the loop and pull the yarn tight around it to form a slip knot. Insert your hook into the loop, wrap the yarn around the hook from back to front and pull through the loop with the hook. One chain stitch made. Make three more chain stitches and then insert the hook into the first chain made, pull up a loop of yarn and then pull through both loops on the hook to make a slip stitch and complete the ring.
- 2). Work the first round. Chain three which counts as the first stitch. Yarn over and place the hook through the ring. Grab the yarn with the hook, pull through the ring, yarn over and pull through two loops on the hook, yarn over again and pull through the last two loops on the hook. One double crochet stitch completed. Repeat until 23 double crochet stitches are made in the ring. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the starting chain. 24 stitches.
- 3). Work the second round. Chain three and work two double crochet in the first stitch. Make three double crochet in each remaining stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in the top of the starting chain. 72 stitches.
- 4). Work subsequent rounds double crochet if desired. Work one double crochet in each stitch of subsequent rounds if the circle is ruffled as desired and you just want to make it larger. Work additional rounds with three double crochet stitches in each stitch if you want to increase the folds in the ruffle while making the circle larger. Fasten off if the ruffled circle is how you want it. To fasten off, cut the yarn six inches from the end of the work and pull through the last loop on the hook. Pull tight and use the crochet hook to hide the end in the stitches.
