Maintenance and Care of Copper Fountains

Of all available fountains, copper fountains require the most maintenance.
They look good and the metal adds a depth to the sound of the flowing water.
You can find copper wall fountains, copper table fountains and copper garden fountains.
Whatever the design of the fountain, here are a few maintenance tips that will enhance and lengthen the life of your copper fountain.
Copper fountains are available in a natural finish and with a clear coating.
Copper turns green over the passing of time because of oxidation.
This powder coating or clear coating is an enamel finish that has been baked in extreme heat and applied to the copper surface to prevent it from turning green.
To clean a copper fountain with this coating, you can use furniture polish and a soft cloth once a week.
Using car wax every few months will keep the copper fountain shining and protect it from oxidation.
Do not use copper polish because this will remove the enamel coating.
If the copper fountain that you have has white spots, you can use a calcium lime remover.
However, if the fountain has a natural copper finish, do not use the calcium lime remover or wax.
It will ruin the fountain surface.
Instead, just clean it with ordinary furniture polish and a soft cloth.
Copper darkens in bright sunlight.
So, another method of maintaining your copper water fountain is by placing it in a relatively shady area.
The climate of the area and the water used plays a vital role in the aging process of a copper fountain.
Pay attention to the company's guidelines on the kind of water to be used.
The build up of minerals in the fountain can stop it from functioning properly.
Make sure that the copper water fountain has enough water to keep it running.
Humidity and evaporation can reduce the water level in the fountain.
Check the pump regularly.
Draining the fountain a few times a year is essential.
Periodically, check the other parts of your copper fountain.
Keep them clean.
This prevents the clogging up of the fountain due to algae, dead leaves or dust.
The water in the fountain should be changed regularly.
After any cleaning method, you have to be careful to wipe off any traces of the cleaning liquid from the fountain's surface.
Don't allow any cleansing solution, whether wax or polish, to run into the water supply of the fountain.
This could ruin the pump.
Never spray any cleaning solution directly onto the surface of the fountain.
Spray it on a cloth and then clean the fountain.
Bear in mind that no matter how well you look after your copper fountain, sooner or later, it will show aging signs.
The oxidation process is a natural one.
You can delay it with good care but you can't prevent it from happening eventually.
But even if the color of the copper water fountain changes with time, with careful maintenance, you could enjoy it for many years to come.
