Want to Attend a Self Storage Auction? Here Are Some Strange Findings

Self storage companies hold auctions when customers fail to pay their bill, auctioning off the contents to bidders.
While most self storage spaces are used by business owners and homeowners to store furniture, clutter and seasonal items, many storage buyers have been surprised by less-than-ordinary uses and interesting finds.
Here are some of the strangest.
Storage Unit Turned Office While most self storage companies do not allow any type of human occupancy in storage units, others set themselves up for people who want mobile businesses.
One example is an attorney who used his unit as an office, complete with book-lined shelves and office furniture.
Burglar Locked in Storage In Missouri, a burglar who was attempting a robbery was locked inside of a storage unit when a security guard noticed a door ajar and latched it.
The guard later contacted police, who freed the burglar and immediately arrested him.
Never Released Michael Jackson Music More than 250 unreleased songs by Michael Jackson were discovered in a unit owned by his father.
The songs were recorded while Jackson was between contracts, meaning no recording company had a legal claim.
This find was worth millions! Cremated Remains There have been many people who have purchased storage units and discovered urns with cremated remains.
The strangest case involved a family in Florida who kept a grandmother's body in a blue casket in a unit for 17 years.
When the family was told that the contents of the unit would be sold for not paying rent, they told the storage company that the contents couldn't be put up for auction! Live Grenade While guns and ammunition are commonly stored in self storage, a Michigan man recently found a live grenade in a unit he purchased.
Nicholas Cage's Rare Comic Book In 2000, Nicholas Cage reported a rare comic book was stolen from his home.
Ten years later, the comic -- Action Comics #1 -- was found in a storage unit.
The man who bought the unit took the comic to a dealer, who was the same who sold it to Nicolas Cage.
Cash Many storage unit buyers find some amount of cash in an abandoned unit, but rarely is it much.
A man in San Jose, however, found thousands of dollars in gold, silver and rare coins which were valued at half a million dollars.
The coins were found in a simple Rubbermaid container.
The man paid just over $1,000 for the unit.
Rare Vehicles Rare cars often turn up in storage.
A 1937 Bugatti 57S was discovered a few years ago in a storage unit in England, where it had been sitting for 50 years.
The car is estimated to have a value of $9 million.
