- 1). Determine where the bar will go. Choose a location that allows easy access to both the front and back side of the bar. Placing the bar near the main seating or barbecue area makes it convenient when entertaining.
- 2). Take measurements of the area to make sure the bar you select fits. Note the dimensions of each potential backyard bar as you shop.
- 3). Note the style of the other patio furniture. Choose a bar that complements the other pieces. If possible, purchase a bar that is part of the same line as your other patio furniture.
- 4). Decide on a shape for the bar. Straight, rectangular bars are common but you'll also find curved and L-shaped bars.
- 5). Choose a material for your outdoor patio bar. Wood and metal are common options. Make sure the bar is made from a material that will handle the weather well. Also consider the top of the bar which might come in glass, tile or the same material as the rest of the piece.
- 6). Consider the amount of storage underneath the bar. Most have at least one shelf to hold beverage bottles. Think about the type of entertaining you do and how much space you'll need.
- 7). Browse the outdoor bar options at the home improvement or furniture store. Note the bars that draw your attention. Evaluate how well your favorite bars will complement your backyard furniture and landscaping.
- 8). Decide if you want to add bar chairs to the front side of the counter. Choose a bar that has matching chairs.
