- 1). Check the input jacks on your TV. Many newer TVs offer five input options. Coaxial, commonly called cable, has a pin and a threaded connector. Composite or RCA has three color-coded plugs: white, red, and yellow. S-Video has a single connector with several pins and must be used with an audio cable. Component has red, green and blue plugs and also must be used in tandem with an audio cable. The highest-quality option is High-Definition Multimedia Interface, or HDMI, which has plugs with narrow, rectangular connectors.
- 2). Look at the back of your DVD player to determine its outputs. DVD players typically have coaxial, composite and component outputs. Many also have S-Video. Newer models have an HDMI output.
- 3). Connect the output jack of the DVD player to the input jack of the TV using the appropriate cables. If you have a choice, HDMI will give the best quality, followed by component, S-Video, composite, and finally, coaxial.
- 4). Turn on your TV and select the input number corresponding to the jack you have plugged the DVD player into. It should be numbered on the back of the television.
- 5). Place a DVD in the DVD player, turn it on, and press "Play." You should see and hear the DVD on your television.
