- 1). Sketch the outline of the horn onto a piece of heavy-duty drawing paper using a graphite pencil and light strokes. Use a picture or photograph of a horn to reference when drawing. Start with the intricate tubes and valves on one side of the instrument and work your way over to the other side, drawing the horn shape as you go.
- 2). Erase any mistakes with a kneadable eraser. Outline the horn darkly with a graphite pencil when you are satisfied with its placement.
- 3). Shade in a horizontal pattern from one side of the tubing toward the middle. Use light strokes and the side of the graphite pencil's tip to create a soft, gradual appearance. Follow all the way around the horn so that one side is dark. Do the same with the other side of the tubing, leaving a thin strip of white in the center. This creates the look of shiny metal. As you reach the wide section of the horn at the end, increase the area of shading on either side. Leave a thicker white space at this widest point.
- 4). Add fine details to the valves using the tip of a well-sharpened graphite pencil.
