How to Create a Miniature Broom Ornament for Halloween

    • 1). Prepare an area that is well lit and large enough to accommodate all of the craft supplies, with the exception of the hot glue gun and scissors. The hot glue gun should be placed in a secure area away from children and pets and regular scissors should be used by adults only.

    • 2). Place orange and black construction paper on the table and begin outlining Jack-o-lantern faces or any other Halloween theme. The Jack-o-lantern faces can be drawn on or the eyes, nose and mouth can be cut out the same way a carved pumpkin would be created. Each face should be drawn in a circle or square if you chose, with an approximate diameter of two inches. You will need two pieces for each face so it will have a front and a back. Depending on which way is easier, you can cut the first face out then lay it on another piece of construction paper and cut out a second face or you can place a second piece of construction paper under the first piece and cut them out at the same time. Once the pieces are cut out, each face front can then be decorated with markers, crayons, bits of felt or alternate colored bits of construction paper glued to the face with Elmer's glue. Bits of moss can also be glued around the rim or at the top of the Jack-o-lantern for extra decoration. Set faces aside to dry.Once dried, the two pieces creating the front and back need to be glued together, or stapled if you chose, around the outer rim on the right and left sides of the face leaving an opening at the top and bottom so the straw broom handle can slip through the opening. If using glue, set aside to dry.

    • 3). Prepare the bottom portion of the straw brooms by dressing each broom up with a piece of Halloween decorated fabric or solid colored felt. Because the shape of the broom is a triangle, the piece of fabric or felt should be cut in this shape. When cutting out the fabric or felt, the triangle tip should extend a little way up the broom handle so it can be secured by tying a small bow with orange and black ribbon. The base piece should cover the broom bristles from side to side but remain short enough so that the bristles at the bottom of the broom are exposed. Small drops of hot glue can be added to the outer rim of the fabric or felt to help hold it securely to the broom. The base can be decorated by gluing small bits of colorful flowers, miniature brooms or any creative design you choose using other bits of felt or construction paper glued to the front of the fabric or felt piece.Prepare the ornament holder by using a piece of black or orange ribbon, approximately 6" in length, to create a loop or bow near the top of the broom handle that can be used to display the ornament. A drop of hot glue can be used to hold the ribbon in place to the broom handle.

    • 4). Take a dried Jack-o-lantern face and, using the opening at the bottom of the face, insert the broom handle into the opening sliding the face onto the broom. Pull out the ribbon loop and if needed, add a drop of hot glue to the inside of the paper face and press it against the broom handle to hold it in place.

    • 5). Continue to put together faces and broom bodies, and then put aside to completely dry.
