- 1). Place the containers where they will receive the maximum sunlight, as near as possible to where the heat will be used. If in the home, the containers should be near a south-facing window, where they will receive the direct rays of the sun.
- 2). Align the containers so they fit as unobtrusively as possible in a room, with the most surface area possible exposed to the sun.
- 3). Fill your containers with water. They should be as full as possible to maximize the heat storage potential of the water.
- 4). Measure the water temperature before and after prolonged exposure to sunlight and again overnight to see how much heat is being stored and released.
- 5). Add or adjust the containers as necessary. Larger containers, such as barrels, will store and release more heat than smaller containers. The more insulated the containers are, the more slowly they will absorb and release heat.
