- Aquaphor is a common over-the-counter drug that is used frequently to treat diaper rash. It is free of fragrances and preservatives and helps to soothe skin that has become irritated. The ointment works as a moisturizer by sealing the skin and preventing water loss. Other uses of this medication should be determined by your doctor.
- Common side effects that may result from using Aquaphor include burning, stinging, skin rash, redness and minor skin irritations. These side effects are not serious and should not be cause for alarm. If any of the side effects become more severe or occur regularly, stop using Aquaphor and contact your doctor.
- Severe side effects may occur in the instance of allergic reaction to the product or if the ointment is ingested. Signs of allergic reaction include severe itching, swelling of the throat or tongue, severe dizziness and difficulty breathing. If ingested, Aquaphor can cause pneumonia. If you experience any of the these side effects or ingest Aquaphor, seek immediate medical attention.
- Aquaphor may react mildly with the following medications: glimepiride, metformin, Exubera, Humulin, insulin and Novolog. Be sure to acquire a complete list of possible drug interactions before using Aquaphor for the first time. Discuss your current use of medications and future use of Aquaphor with your doctor.
- Be sure to discuss the use of Aquaphor on your child with your doctor. Individuals with frequent skin conditions or allergies should consult their doctor before regularly using. Avoid contact with the eyes, mouth and open sores or wounds.
