How to Crochet a Hat in the Round

    • 1). Make a chain of three stitches and use a slip stitch to join. Chain three and make 11 double crochets in the middle of the ring. Join with a slip stitch in the space between the chain and the first double crochet.

    • 2). Chain three and turn. Double crochet in the same space you used to join and double crochet twice in each space around. Join with a slip stitch in the space between the chain and the first double crochet. You have increased the ring by 12 stitches for a total of 24 stitches.

    • 3). Chain three and turn. Double crochet in the same space you used to join. Double crochet once in the next space. Double crochet twice in the following space and once in the next space. Repeat this pattern, ending with one double crochet in the last space. Join with a slip stitch in the space between the chain and the first double crochet. You have increased the ring by 12 stitches for a total of 36 stitches.

    • 4). Chain three and turn. Double crochet in the same space you used to join. Double crochet once in each of the next two spaces. Double crochet twice in the following space followed by a double crochet in each of the next two spaces. Repeat this pattern finishing with a double crochet in the final space. Join with a slip stitch in the space between the chain and the first double crochet. You have increased the ring by 12 stitches for a total of 48 stitches.

    • 5). Continue this pattern of increasing by chaining three, turning, double crocheting in the space used to join and then double crocheting in each of the next spaces, increasing this number by one each time. For example, this time you will double crochet in each of the next three spaces, then double crochet twice in the next space and repeat around. In the next round, you will double crochet in each of the next four spaces, then double crochet twice in the next space and repeat around. Continue increasing by 12 stitches per round until the circle is almost the size of the top of the hat wearer's head.

    • 6). Maintain the same number of stitches for the remainder of the hat. Chain three, turn, and double crochet in each of the spaces, joining at the end of the round in the space between the chain and the first double crochet. Repeat until the hat is the desired length. Trim the end and feed through the last loop, pulling it tight. Weave the tail through the stitches.
