- Children love to learn about animals and their habitats. Focus on favorite animals, such as dinosaurs, frogs, horses, bees and ladybugs. Study animals based on their classification within the animal kingdom, such as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, birds and insects. Learn about the animals by their habitats, such as the pond, ocean, forest or rain forest.
- Transportation is a part of preschoolers' daily lives and naturally feeds into their curiosity about how things move. Trains provide a huge source of fascination for young ones. Those preparing to enter kindergarten are also very excited about the prospect of riding a school bus. Focus on one particular type of transportation, or include all things that go in the air, on the land or in the water.
- Even young children stare up into the night sky, dreaming of what lies beyond. Blast off into knowledge as you study the planets, the moon and the stars. Emphasize our planet Earth and lead into the topic of green living and caring for the environment.
- The four seasons provide a wealth of topical ideas throughout the school year. Introduce a new theme as each season changes. Within each season are numerous holidays to be celebrated. Big ones are Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, and Easter. Include some cultural ones, such as Cinco de Mayo, Chinese New Year and Diwali. Look for some nontraditional ones, such as International Peace Day, National Hat Day and National Children's Day.
