Do It Yourself Storage Bench

    Measurements

    • Measure the length and width of the area the storage bench will go in. It should not cover air vents or block exits. For simplicity, the instructions will be for a 2 feet wide by 18 inch tall by 5 foot long storage bench. For durability's sake, use plywood that is at least three-quarter inch thick. Add a couple inches to the measurements for the hinged lid on top, if necessary, to create a lip that is easier to lift. Sand down all of the wood before using so it is easier to finish.

    Directions

    • Begin by building a basic topless box. Lay out a plank of three-quarter inch wood 5 x 2 feet that will become the bottom of the box. Take a 18 inch x 2 foot wide piece and line one edge with wood glue. Align the glue-lined edge with the left end of the bottom plank. Clamp the wood together on the ends and allow to dry. While it is drying, repeat the same process on the opposite end. Always drill pilot holes before securing with 1¼-inch wood screws.

Using three-quarter inch wood, do a dry fitting of one 5 foot x 18 inch front plank and a 5 foot x 24 inch back plank. The back plank needs to be a bit taller to accommodate the hinges and to serve as a lid stopper. If the ends of the front and back planks are not flush with the side planks, trim them with a circular or table saw. Lay a bead of wood glue along the edges of one side and press one plank firmly against it. Use bar clamps to secure it into place until it dries. Once it has dried, secure that side with wood screws. Repeat the process with the final side.

Use two piano hinges to attach the lid on each side. Depending on the desired length, a third hinge might be necessary in the middle of the lid. Security hinges can be attached to each side of the lid so that it will not accidentally close. Use a router with a small head to create a rounded lip on the front.

    Finishing

    • The finished bench can be painted or stained and polyurethaned. Casters can be added to the bottom of the bench so that it is easier to move.
