Guide Review - Cass Turnbull's Guide to Pruning by Cass Turnbull
Cass Turnbull has coined the term 'mal-pruning' to describe the widespread practice of improper pruning by well-meaning people. In Cass Turnbull's Guide to Pruning, she uses wisdom and humor to provide a thorough education on the world of proper pruning.
The book begins by introducing the basics. She uses illustrations to demonstrate the proper places and ways to make your pruning cuts. Tools to use and times to prune are also discussed. Many of her own experiences and obervations are included, further illustrating her points.
Cass Turnbull's Guide to Pruning really shines in the next section. Pruning techniques and hints are provided for over 160 different plant species. The plants are grouped into 6 different chapters:
- Mounding-Habit Shrubs
- Cane-Growing Shrubs
- Tree-Like Shrubs
- Vines
- Trees
- Ground Covers
At the end, there are two appendices. One is a very handy guide to "Regional Pruning by Plant Habit" that has lists of common species for several different US regions, grouped by growing habits. The other is "Three Views on Sterilizing Your Tools", an important precaution against spreading plant diseases.
I would highly recommend Cass Turnbull's Guide to Pruning. Proper pruning is essential to the health and appearance of your plants, but sadly, improper techniques are used far too often. This book will ensure you are taking care of them the right way.
