In fact, 90% of our brain is used in managing our coordination and making tiny adjustments to our balance to keep us from falling down. There are cells in our muscles and joint capsules called proprioceptors that send body position data to the brain. This kinesthetic sense allows us to keep our balance when our eyes are closed, and it is what's affected when we become inebriated. As you can imagine it is of utmost importance to keep this proprioceptive system working properly.
When our bones are stuck out of alignment or our joints aren't moving in their proper range of motion, our kinesthetic awareness is diminished. As a feedback mechanism, when joints are really locked up and not functioning properly, they send pain signals to the brain rather than position information. This happens more often that you think. Simple everyday activities like sitting at a desk, sleeping funny, having stress or drinking a lot of coffee can cause our body to tighten up thereby preventing proper joint position and range of motion. These physical, emotional and chemical stressors on our body all affect how our brain interprets and responds to our environment.
Whenever you make a decision, whether conscious or unconscious, you want to know all the facts before you act. You want to know if the car you are about to buy has water damage, whether the house has termites or mold. What the odds are before you bet. If your brain is not getting all the right information from your tissues regarding position sense, you aren't getting all the information necessary to respond appropriately to your environment.
Think about hiking on an uneven trail, doing yoga, lifting weights, or just walking around the house. You will do all these activities more effectively and with a lower chance of injury or loss of balance if your proprioceptive system is working at 100%. The great thing about chiropractic is that it keeps all your joints functioning properly, to maximize your brain's ability to coordinate our balance and posture.
Chiropractors remove nervous system interference from the body. The most significant way chiropractors do this is by keeping the spine aligned and healthy so the nerves exiting the spinal cord can function properly and don't get pinched. Another very significant way chiropractors remove nerve interference is by keeping our other bones and joints, the ones in our feet, arms, and legs aligned, so our brain can get all the information it needs to correctly manage our balance and coordination.
